Parcel Handling

The emulator in this case study is an implementation of the versatile Emulogix conveyor emulator.

As with all of the other Emulogix emulators, a configuration database describes the physical and electrical layout of the conveyor system. The emulator communicates with the system controller or PLC, convincing it that it is at the customer site.

Parcel handling emulation is particularly challenging due to high speeds and the volumes of material. Accurate emulation of acceleration and deceleration is important to accurately merge parcels without collisions, and, in testing metering devices ... technologies which separate and singulate parcels so that the parcels may be sorted accurately and efficiently.

Modern parcel handling systems implement a variety of algorithms to efficiently use conveyor space and maximize throughput. The scripting capabilities of the emulator realizes the capability to test all possible combinations. Due to speeds and the complexities inherent in the application, being able to test these algorithms using real parcels and real equipment is at best, expensive, and at worst, nearly impossible.
